This project reimagines SYSTEM's FW26 collection through the lens of displacement — as seen by Korean photographers based in France, observing the brand from the perspective of an outsider within a foreign landscape.

Hong Sungyeon is a Paris-based visual artist whose practice draws on her experience in fashion, expanding clothing, textiles, and patterns into a painterly visual language. 

Rather than viewing fashion simply as a means of adorning the body or as an object of consumption, she approaches it as a visual medium that expresses personal identity, memory, and social relationships. 

Moving between fashion and art, she explores how images can generate different meanings when placed within new contexts.

This project begins with looking at clothing, something familiar and often taken for granted, from an unfamiliar perspective. 

By placing garments within a new context, she seeks to reveal the possibilities hidden within the familiar. Moments of similarity and difference, familiarity and unfamiliarity coexist within a single image. The images evoke memories and experiences that seem recognizable, while reconstructing existing perceptions through the perspective of the present. 

Objects we believe we already know are no longer read in the same way, allowing new meanings to emerge between the familiar and the unfamiliar.

For this shoot, Sungyeon wanted the clothes to feel familiar yet strange, as though they had been placed in ways that seemed plausible but had never been seen before. 

The garments retain their recognizable forms, yet appear in positions and arrangements rarely encountered. These placements seem impossible, while still feeling somehow possible, lending a subtle sense of precariousness to familiar objects. 

By capturing moments in which an unstable composition feels unexpectedly stable, she sought to create a state in which opposing sensations coexist. Through these unexpected arrangements, she makes familiar forms appear unfamiliar, inviting viewers to discover differences in objects they would otherwise take for granted.
